First; Let’s start with some questions that you need to ask yourself:

  • Which goals have I set for this year?
  • How many of them have I actually achieved?
  • How satisfied am I about this?
  • What are the reasons I have not achieved xyz goal?
  • Were these unachieved goals important to me?
  • What did I learn from this?

On a scale from 1 – 10, whereby 1 is the worst and 10 the best…..

How satisfied are you?

These are the questions you should be asking yourself when reviewing your year and goal setting for the year! One of the topics I teach during my 1:1 coaching sessions are exactly goal setting and creating an action plan to follow through. During my years as a coach there is this one reason that determines if someone will reach their goal.

The number 1 reason why people don’t achieve their goals is because of lack of perseverance.

They simply give up.

Perseverance you have to develop. You have to train it like a muscle. It’s proven that people who have developed their perseverance do not “suffer“ from setbacks. For them adversity is temporary. They throw themselves into their desires with unstoppable force and they just know how to turn every setback into a victory and see adversity as a motivation to do better.

As Colin Powell puts it:

‘Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence!”

I’ve made a list of questions and if you’ve answered 3 or more with yes than you lack some perseverance ( don’t worry though because I’m here to help you):

What are some symptoms of a lack of perseverance? Check them off as you go through the list.

  • I’m unable to acknowledge and determine exactly what I want
  • I procrastinate with or without reasons ( my list is long)
  • I’m indecisive and I have the habit of shuffling responsibilities instead of getting things done
  • I’m too busy making excuses to avoid making concrete plans.(Carelessness)
  • I always choose the path of least resistance (Indifference)
  • I compromise easy
  • Lack of structured plans
  • I wish instead of desiring
  • I give up easily because of negative thoughts and allow my ego to make decisions for me
  • I fear criticism

Criticism is a big one. People who are afraid of criticism feel inadequate to plan or execute and are constantly fearing or worrying about the opinions of others. It’s very cunning and loves to hide and show itself as something completely different, like having insecurities. Another factor that may cause your lack of perseverance is the influence of family members, close friends and people close around you like co-workers. As the saying goes, you are the average of the 5 people that are closest to you.

If you want to change your results it’s time you know now for once and for all how to develop perseverance and to be successful in your business and life!

  1. Choose a definite goal that is supported by a burning desire. You can cultivate the burning desire by meditating and visualizing your goal every day….Every day!
  2. Draw up a well-defined plan and take immediate action, start implementing that plan today!
  3. Honor yourself. Close your mind to all negative and discouraging influences from family, friends and acquaintances.
  4. Let go of your ego ( put it in a closet)
  5. Surround yourself with same-minded people. Invest in a relationship with one or more people who encourage you to accomplish both your plan and your goal. Without the strength of people around you who support you, it will be difficult to sustain.

And remember…..Consistency is the key!

Do something towards your goal, everyday!
